Tameside has a CAP contact group which consists of a multidisciplinary team with representatives from Oakdale school, occupational therapy, speech therapy, learning support advisory teacher (EPALS), VI, ICT, Inclusion Officer, Ace Centre North and Ability Net, the companies involved in the CAP project. If you are interested in joining this group then please contact Jenny Stanley for more details.
Many pupils in Tameside have benefited from CAP equipment. ICT equipment provided has increased the access of children to the full range of school experiences by helping them to overcome barriers to learning caused by written or spoken communication difficulties.
The learning support advisory teacher attached to your school is able to offer you support with your applications when CAP re-opens for new referrals.
The CAP website is currently closed for new Applications (from Monday 28th February, 2005). This is to allow the current referrals to be processed.
If you have any general queries about CAP: The Communication Aids Project run by BECTA information is available on their website at http://cap.becta.org.uk/.
The Dyslexia Assessment Course for CAP Contacts hosted by Tameside EPALS on 13th April 2005 and run by Sue Storr from Abilitynet at Portland Basin was very well received. Visitors came from across the northwest and as far afield as Kent to take part in the course. Tamesides LSATs and specialist teachers at high schools with pupils receiving CAP equipment also took advantage of this excellent training opportunity which covered Windows built-in options, word prediction, mind mapping and voice recognition. Portland Basin provided an excellent lunch and interesting venue.
