Education Resource Team

Who is service aimed at?

The Education Resource Team is team of teachers, learning mentors and support officers working alongside other professionals to support Looked After Children and their carers. We work with Looked After Children, Foster Carers, Relative Carers, Adopters, Residential Carers, Schools and Designated teachers and a network of professional and agencies working with Looked After Children.

What does your service offer?

We aim to improve outcomes for Looked After Children and young people in 5 areas.

To support educational opportunities and improve outcomes we:

  • Monitor all Tameside Looked After Children in their educational placement
  • Work directly with children and young people in the school
  • Support the school and Designated Teacher around the individual need of the child and collective needs of the establishment
  • Ensure all Looked After Children have a high quality and meaningful Personal Education Plan (PEP)
  • Focus on achievement through individual target setting and raising attainment across all Key Stages
  • Provide guidance and support to young people into year 12 and Further Education
  • Support children, young people and their carers through transition times
  • Support adopters in identifying school placements
  • Provide support and advice on educational matters to all professionals working with Looked After Children
  • Support Looked After Children to attend school working in close collaboration with Educational Welfare Officers
  • Work directly with the Special Educational Needs and the Placement Bureau Officer to ensure that appropriate out of borough placements are secured
  • Support Looked After Children at Foundation Stage for one year before entering Reception class (each 3-5 year old will have a Foundation Stage PEP)

To support and promote health and well being we:

  • Work in partnership with colleagues in the Health Service to raise awareness about the health needs of Looked After Children
  • Provide information and advice on Community and Leisure activities

To support the care placement we:

  • Work in partnership with colleagues to refer young people to CAMHS
  • Work with schools in offering circle time work to help Looked After Children to feel safe and understand their feelings

To encourage participation and positive behaviour we:

  • Work with young people and their carers to ensure their views are incorporated into Education Resource Team planning and delivery
  • Work with agencies to reduce absence from school

To support Looked After Children' economic well being and support into Further Education and training we:

  • Work with partners to ensure Looked After Children benefit from development of 14-19 opportunities
  • Work with partners to support the successful transition post 16

We offer a range of support services, these include:

  • Multi-agency support to promote inclusion
  • A named member of the ERT will monitor each Looked After Child
  • Direct work to support education, support for raising the attainment of Looked After Children in SATs and GCSEs
  • All Looked After Children's placement moves will be monitored and their education supported
  • Support for Looked After Children when transferring between schools
  • Targeted intervention, consultation and direct work
  • Raising awareness and communicating with all support and advisory services
  • Support and training for staff working with Looked After Children
  • Proactive support for Designated Teachers
  • Telephone support, home visits and training for carers and adopters

How do schools access your service?

The service as available to all Tameside's Looked After Children. As soon as a child becomes looked after, a member of the ERT is allocated to the child and will make contact with the child's school.
