The service is aimed at pupils who are unable to attend school, usually because of sickness, injury, pregnancy or permanent exclusion.
The service offers high quality educational provision tailored to the needs of pupils out of school. For most pupils the provision offered is full-time, but in some cases part-time programmes better meet the pupils needs. The pupils are taught in small groups and at KS4 a range of alternative curriculum and work experience providers are used to supplement the curriculum on offer.
For Hyde and Ashton Pupil Referral Units the access is normally via permanent exclusion.
For Bridgeway Pupil Referral Unit direct referral by schools or from medical services is the norm.
To refer to Bridgeway for medical reasons, schools need to use the referral form, which is included in the policy guidance that has been distributed to schools "Access to Education for Children and Young People with Medical Conditions (including pregnancy)." All enquiries about this can be made to Wendy Evans, Head of Centre, on 0161 330 7970.
Any referral about a pregnant schoolgirl should be sent directly to Maddy Monaghan, the Teenage Pregnancy Re-Integration Officer on a second referral form, which is included in the above policy. Maddy can be contacted at Connexions on 0161 330 1528.
