The Inclusion Showcase

Pupil Centred Planning

Presenters

Karen Buchanan, Denise Jones and Ann Sanders.

Why did you decide to undertake this piece of work? How had you identified the need?

This initiative has been generated by the need to involve children and young people in reviewing and action planning provision. It also enables parents and carers to become more actively engaged in the process.

What were the objectives and intended outcomes?

The objectives have been to devise a Tameside model for pupil centred planning meetings by conducting pilot reviews in primary and secondary schools, evaluating the impact and reviewing the process.

What actions did you take over what time frame?

There was an awareness-training event followed by 3 days training in 2006. A steering group was established to consider implications and practice. There have been a number of pilot reviews in the authority.

What were the resource implications?

The main resource is time. A PCP review currently takes up to an hour and a half. It also involves meetings with the child/ young person prior to the meeting.

What has been the impact? How have you measured outcomes?

The PCP reviews held to date have been evaluated by all participants. The process has been very well received.

What do you plan to do next? How will you ensure sustainability?

It is intended that in-house training will take place in 2 secondary schools and 2 primary schools in order to build capacity. This initiative will be one that will develop across the authority, as it will also be incorporated into reviews held in conjunction with some support services.

What were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge has been to ensure that requirements of statutory paperwork have been addressed. Statemented reviews and PEP reviews have been piloted. We are still in the process of looking at ways to reduce the time elements of the process.
